The Avon Magpies Collectors’ Club was started in August 1994, after I had produced a small colour Price Guide for UK collectors. There were only American Price Guides at the time and when left a little money by a relative I decided I would write my own. My husband took the photographs of my large collection of Avon and I spent three years researching and pricing items for the guide. The book was well received and consequently sold out, through collectors’ magazines and by word of mouth. Several people who had bought the Price Guide asked me if I would consider running a club for collectors’ as there were none available for this hobby in the UK. After a lot of thought I started the club, expecting a small, dedicated collector group to join. Within a couple of years the membership was up to 300. One of the first club members wrote to me, saying, “Thank you for producing a book and club for magpies like us!” The Avon Magpies was born.
The Avon Collectors’ Club is for collectors of Avon Cosmetics items and has a two-monthly newsletter, usually of 6 pages, which includes information on both old and new Avon items, answers to queries, a buy, sell and swap section and other items of interest. Advertising is free for Club Members but only your name and area and telephone number will be used – I do not print addresses! Click here for full details about joining the Avon Magpies Collectors' club.
The club fees are £9 per year, just to cover costs and postage etc, the Club year running from August to July. All subs are due before the August edition of the newsletter. If you should join the Magpies during the Club year, you will receive back issues of the newsletters. If you are interested in joining the club please click here for full details
The club is not affiliated with Avon, although most queries about older containers etc sent to Avon at Northampton are forwarded to me. I am not usually able to help with queries about discontinued cosmetics, perfumes, etc.
We moved to France in 2003 and decided that if the members wanted me to continue running the club, I would. As we bought a large house here, we had room to open a couple of small museums, one for my husband’s collection of vintage wireless and one for my Avon. The museums opened in May 2005, entry is free with a charity box for donations, and it has proved very popular with both French and English alike, many people returning with friends.
